For the long-established independent Groton School, OLD&D’s design team resurrected their riverfront presence with renovations and expansion of the school’s existing boathouse. This project called for restructuring of the interior space to provide more efficient scull storage with a new racking system. Additional storage and workshop space, new team rooms and bathrooms round out the program. As the existing structure expanded, it was re-clad and detailed to reflect the classical architectural elements from New England’s long tradition of shingle-style boathouses along the river. The completed boathouse interior will serve the school’s boating traditions with a new entry and lobby, and the exterior will reinforce the building’s relationship to older, period structures on Groton’s campus.
