Located in historic Newport, RI, the van Beuren Building addition and renovtion included a new two and a half story academic wing. The program features an upgraded and expanded library, new state-of-the-art science labs, an art learning center, pre-K and Kindergarten classrooms, and a dining facility with expanded gallery space.
The new academic wing took its architectural direction from the original "Mason House" built in 1902 by architect Irving Gill. Accentuated with stucco walls and arched details, the design team incorporated elements of the Mission Style to comply with the Historical Commision, but also to weave the campus buildings back into the fabric of the adjacent historic neighborhood.
Designers used brillant colors to integrate the interior furnishings and finishes, and direct/indirect lighting to establish an engaging learning environment. The second-floor lobby is the key organizing element connecting the upper classrooms where students and teachers interact.
