At the Back Bay site of the Harvard Club, the firm refurbished guest rooms, then expanded and created new fitness and dining facilities. A former unused storage basement was adapted into a fully equipped fitness center and restaurant. New squash courts with glass fronts opened up the formerly dark underground interiors. Designers “found space” in the lower level to provide a generouslyproportioned, bright aerobics room andwell-equipped fitness room. The lower-level dining area was first conceived as a juice bar, butblossomed into a restaurant instead. Throughout the interior, bright lighting, open spaces with glass, and the playful use of classical elements, such as a freestanding Ionic column, transformed a claustrophobic, leftover storage space into anattractive commercial asset for the club.
